I guess they really want me to run the cd before hooking up the router :)

Don’t believe it! I just setup a Linksys WRT54G about 2 weeks ago and the CD is still sealed in the original envelope. You don’t need it.

I didn’t figure as much - and it was even more useless because I only hooked it up to update the firmware, configure it, and jam it back in the box to send out to a friend.

Linksys official firmware, or one of the third party firmwares?

http://www.linksysinfo.org has some great information on these devices. The third part firmware that’s available really unlocks their potential. I’ve got my WRT54G working with an Apple AirportExpress to wirelessly extend my WLAN. It didn’t work out of the box (which agrees with what Apple says) but it worked on the first shot using one of the available third party firmwares.

Well I run Sveasoft firmware on my 54g :) When I get my file server back online I’m going to be getting transparent proxy to work.

Since this is a gift for a non-technical person (Hence me configuring it and putting stickers on with all the info need to use it) I figured it’s best if I just still with the off the shelf firmware :)
