Flash on Ruby on Rails

ActionStep and Rails

Ok this appears to be in formation phase - but apparantly they are working on making it easy to build apps in flash using Rails?

Dunno - but it could be cool?

Ruby Annotation

I’m guessing this in some way relates to why it is called ruby :) (Plus a ruby is more valuable than a perl)

Ruby Annotation
1.1 What is ruby?

Ruby is the term used for a run of text that is associated with another run of text, referred to as the base text. Ruby text is used to provide a short annotation of the associated base text. It is most often used to provide a reading (pronunciation guide). Ruby annotations are used frequently in Japan in many kinds of publications, including books and magazines. Ruby is also used in China, especially in schoolbooks.

ROR :Scaling - Depolyment

Ok I’m knee deep in my first Rails app atm. I’ve learned a lot - which at some point I’m going to corral into an article….

There is one thing at the end of the tunnel which makes me a little nervous. I’m not entirely sure the best route for deployment. Part of that also ties into the question of how does Rails scale.

To be honest - I’m not that terribly worried about this issue. So far everything I’m looking at works (from a deployment side) just like PHP which thanks to Yahoo - there is proof that you can handle a boat load of traffic. Of course the app I’m working on won’t get a boat load (more like a thimble full - which is the other reason I’m not terribly worried at this point).

This whole scaling thing seems to be a hot topic out there - and probably more so because it is an easy thing to throw out there to say - Rails sucks because it can’t possibly scale -

I would love to argue against it but instead I’ll lean on greater minds than my own -

Scaling Ruby on Rails < - exposes the dirty truth - it's the developer who is the problem most of the time

It’s boring to scale with Ruby On Rails - This one is from the guy who wrote Rails…

They almost got me…

I have a PSP. I actually got it as a pre-order because I was so excited about it. Truth be told it hasn’t been the best experience. The games have mostly sucked (Lumines is the exception).

Lately I’ve been using it as a mobile video platform. I just pull content off my ReplayTV re-encode it and jam it on the memory stick. This is sweet! The screen is beautiful and the battery lasts a long time using it this way. Plus I can keep it in my pocket and turn it off and turn it back on and it will stay at the same point in the movie. This is perfect on a plane. Now I can watch stuff on the short hop from SAT -> DFW. That leg is way to short to deal with getting a laptop out and setup.

Then recently I saw an article in Wired. Actually it was more like a sidebar. It was all about how you can run old school NES/SNES/GB/Mame games on the PSP if you have a 1.0(japan)/1.50(US) firmware.

Guess what? I have a 1.50 firmware. So I downloaded some simple NES games (Hello Mario) and have been enjoying it ever since. There are more games than I can shake a stick at - if anyone can recommend me games for the above platforms I would love to know - since I never had one I wasn’t really into them at the time….

Then Sony sends me an email that I can sign up for Socom:Fireteam Bravo Beta for the PSP. There’s a catch - you have to upgrade to 2.0 firmware to even sign up. I really love Socom on the PS2 - it was one of the games I played forever. Now I can get it again - all I have to do is give up the homebrew/emulation……

I’ll admit I was tempted (for all of 3 seconds) I figure they’re going to crack the 2.0 eventually and I’ll deal with upgrading then. Until then you’ll find me in the car enjoying Mario World/Ghosts n Ghouls all over again…

Cursed (2005)

Cursed (2005)

Ok this showed up in my mail box - at some point I added it to the netflix queue.

I’m not sure if it was because it was by Wes Craven (Who has made enough stinkers he is definitly not on my always watch list), because it has Christina Ricci in it (who I seem to like less and less as she gets older), or because it has Jesse Eisenberg (Who I thought was in freeks and geeks but it turns out - he was in “Get Real” and Rodger Dodger - both of which I really liked.

I’m guessing it was the last one.

Well whatever the reason - I can tell you right now it was a mistake. I don’t know what I was thinking. This is a werewolf movie. And as far as I can tell the best werewolf movie ever made was Teen -Wolf with a close second being American Werewolf In London

The second one had great special effects and some horribly gruesome scenes in it - but the honest truth is that I would actually watch Teen Wolf again - which in my book means it is a better film.

Anyway - this movie has a boat load of cameos - Scott Baio being my favorite ( I was so disappointed he didn’t turn out to be a werewolf).

I wish I could explain why this movie was sooo bad. Maybe the cgi effects just didn’t seem real enough. Maybe the limited number of characters meant that it was super easy to figure out who the good/bad guys were. Maybe it was because really there isn’t much suspense to watching a giant wolf gnaw on some women in various states of undress.

The thing that really struck me was how much this movie was like so many before it. I think that was really the bad part. I mean this was an opportunity to redo the entire werewolf genre - in the end they just made the same film they’ve made a hundred times. Where is the Wes Craven that made scream?

Bottom Line: Just remember that it will be you that is “Cursed” if you allow yourself or anyone you know to see this film.

And I thought my moblogging got weird…

Below is a picture of one of my favorite food personalities - Alton Brown - I’m hoping this is for an upcoming episode of Good Eats about waffels - other wise I going to start worrying about Alton

The Butterfly Effect (2004)

The Butterfly Effect (2004)

Ok I went into this iwth pretty low expectations. It just seemed like a bad film right up front, but I needed something to watchin on a recent plane flight - and this was available.

This movie is a cross between Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Ground Hog Day, Bedazzled, and somehing M. Night Shyamalan would come up with.

The movie took forver to get going. All along they way you were faced with characters that were evil and disgusting - and no sign of Kelso anywhere.

The setup part of the film (the beginging) was so strange that I was actually sucked into the movie. I wanted to see why they had the character have such a horrible life. I will admit I was actually interested in seeing how they tied in all the horrible things that happen.
