Constantine (2005)

Constantine (2005)

I’ll admit it - I went into this movie with low expectations. Now I’m wondering why I watched it at all. I guess I just wanted to see how bad a comic book turned movie could be.

Guess what - this movie sucked. The story was muddled. The mythology was a hodgepodge of traditional Catholism with a mix of other silliness - who knew that you could use a cat and bucket of water to access hell. I live with two cats - so now I’m afraid I’m accidentally going to go to the neterhworld on a rainy day.

There was one part of the film I thought was funny - near the end Satan shows up. He offers to light a cigarette for Keanu. He strikes the zippo and then he keeps moving it so Keanu can’t quite light the thing. Yes fold - that was the best part of the movie - Satan being annoying and childish.

Bottom Line: See the first Matix for Sci Fi/Special Effects or My Own Private Idaho if you just want to Keanu act - or if you want acting, special effects, comic book stuff, and style - see Sin City - but what ever you do don’t see this movie.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Complete Collection

Ok I admit it - I was a huge fan of Buffy (until it to UPN and then I just couldn’t keep up) but now they’re releasing a complete collection - 40 DVDs in all. Unbelievable. I would almost be tempted if I bought DVDs. (I quit since I know I’m just going to be annoyed when I think about getting them again in HD).

Postie - 0.9.8.4

New Version

Ok I’m rolling out a bunch of bug fixes to Postie. The biggest is that if you post plain text but are set to prefer HTML it will actually put in the images you post.

I’m going to be offline for a few weeks so hopefully this will help make Postie a little more stable for everyone.

Also - I got a complaint that Markdown causes problems with Postie. Postie will now complain about it. I’ve never used Markdown before - so if any of ya’ll do - someone please confirm that it still causes a problem and that it wasn’t just the HTML -No Images problem.

I added some new FAQ entries as well as the following:

BUGFIX: Fixed problem with config_form.php - select had "NULL" instead of ""
BUGFIX: 3g2 now supported
BUGFIX: More line break issues addressed
BUGFIX: QuickTime controls are now visible even if the movie is done playing
BUGFIX: Email addresses in the format (Full Name) supported
BUGFIX: Some images that were not being resized - are now
BUGFIX: HTML problems - if you posted plain text with HTML on it ignored all images
BUGFIX: The test system blew up on the thumbnails
BUGFIX: Selected HTML for preferred text is now shown in the config form properly
BUGFIX: Postie now complains if it is not in its own directory
BUGFIX: Postie doesn’t include PEAR if it is already available
BUGFIX: In Test mode rejected emails are simply dropped
BUGFIX: Markdown messes up Postie - it will warn you if you turn it on.

Why Good Programmers Are Lazy and Dumb

I realized that, paradoxically enough, good programmers need to be both lazy and dumb.

I totally agree - and once you read what he means you’ll agree too :)

The Loved One (1965)

The Loved One (1965)

Annie was very excited about this movie - partly because it was obscure and she hadn’t seen it in a long long time - and it just happened to be playing this week on Turner Classic Movies - and because I had never even heard of it.

In many ways it is hard to explain the movie. Let’s start by saying that the movie is based off a book. The book was partially fantasy and partially based on the writer’s experience visiting Hollywood from England. (Though it appears for legal reasons that the author disavowed any connection to the real world in the writing).

The movie has an odd feeling from the start. You just have to give in and ride along. It has a dry and sarcastic wit. To be honest a combination of odd over blown characters and the black and white astetic I was strongly reminded of Dr Strangelove (Which was actually released the year before).

If you replaced Peter Sellers with Jonathan Winters and instead of talking about the bomb - it’s all about love and the funeral business (Watch out Six Feet Under).

Frankly even if you don’t like the film itself as a whole - there are a number of funny parts to keep you in - plus you can do a heck of a lot of celebrity spotting - from Milton Burle , Marlon Brando, Liberace, Tab Hunter, Sir John Gielgud, James Coburn just to name a few. (My peronsal favorite was Paul Williams III - who played Little Enus in Smokey and the Bandit. This was his first movie).

Knowing that the movie is based on a book will prepare you for the ending. I would say more but just remember that things have a way of working themselves out.

Bottom Line: If you want a dark satire with a mix of stars, and a funny look at America in the 60s - this is really good movie. Something holds it back from greatness but that shouldn’t stop you from seeing it.
