Huo Yuan Jia (2006)

Huo Yuan Jia (2006)

This is being released here in the States as - Jet Li’s Fearless.

At the request of my wife, I’m going to see if I can get back in the saddle and start reviewing some movies. At some point I took a break and now the back log is crazy (it didn’t help that I saw three this weekend).

What is all comes down to is this - it’s Saturday afternoon and you wife asks - “Hey do you want to go see the new Jet Li film?”

I ask you - is there any other answer than “Yes”. Sure they can be a little over the top, but you have to give him some credit - he knows how to throw down on some serious ass kicking.

This seems a lot closer to Hero than to Cradle to the Grave. The move away from the modern to the more historical is a good choice.

That’s the thing about this movie - it is apparently based on a true story. How closely it stays to its historical roots - I have no idea. All I know is that in the first few minutes of the film they tell you the ending - or at least it appears that way.

This is the story of a guy who can seriously fight. He’s good at it, and it is all he knows. In a lot of movies that would probably be enough plot (see the new movie The Marine).

Some people are going to say that they got too much non-ass kicking in this Jet Li movie. I mean don’t get me wrong - there is a lot of serious fighting - but there is a good 20 minutes where no one gets punched or anything.

This ends up being a more mature and rounded film than I expected. You get to see the character develop and understand where he fits into the greater cycle of life.

The main plot centers around the West’s oppression of China. And there is a lot of pro-China nationalism in the film. Since this is from an era before communism you can see it as simply a people standing up for themselves - or you can see it as pro-China propoganda. I didn’t end up worrying to much about either and just took it at face value.

In the end, I walked away from the movie that acutally did a good job of showing the spiritual side of the martial arts. All to often films focus on the hero’s ability to break objects and people. This film shows how important the understanding of the true goals of studying martial arts.

This is especial important because this is supposed to be his last martial arts film. It is a good way to go out, but a shame that just as he seemed to really hit his stride he’s decided to focus on other things.

Bottom Line: Li’s last role, solid (if schmaltzy) plot, combined with great action means go see it in the theater where the kicks and flips can truly be enjoyed!

YouTube - White & Nerdy

The especially awesome thing about this is the Star Wars Holiday Special bootleg he buys at the end. Yup - I have that - true the to geek core - I got a copy handed to me in college - one of those trully odd things to have in your video collection (from an era when video actually meant VHS Video Tape)

Travels With Beer

From a friend -

Evidently beer in checked luggage is permissible. The restrictions that apply are you need to wrap every bottle well or buy special Styrofoam containers. Mark the boxes clearly and the airline will handle the boxes carefully and put them through a special X-ray for fragile items. Usually I’ve been restricted to 70 lbs. for check on baggage so weigh it before you get to the airport because extra baggage can be real expensive. Last time I left Brussels they were asking 370 euro for extra luggage. Below is the address to the TSA section on alcoholic beverages.

I have a couple of sets of really nice packing boxes for this exact purpose - but I haven’t found a source for them (The ones I have come from a beer club subscription)

Looking At Ice Makers

Ok so I was looking around at ice makers. Specifically I was supposed to find an ice maker that can make ice like Sonic - which I always thought was called pebble ice. Below is actual text from an actual commercial web site. They apparently sell ice makers that do what I want. See if you can spot the part of the sentence that did not go through the marketing department:

From :Ice Machines | Vivian Ice Machines and Ice Makers for Commercial and Home

Vivian is proud to supply “Nugget” (Pellet) ice machines from Follett. Also known as chewblet ice, “Sonic™ Ice” or “the rabbit turd” ice, nugget ice can enhance your drinking experience by melting more slowly and is easy to chew once your drink is consumed.

Good to know that there are other more kid friendly ways to describe the ice - things like rabbit turd!

tamperdata

I haven’t had a chance to really dig in - but you have to love a tool that has easy options for XSS built in as menu options - guess the few excuses you have left for not building web apps that survive against the slings and arrows of script kiddies out there are quickly going the way of the dodo.

mozdev.org - tamperdata: index

This extension for Firefox makes it seriously easy to play around with the data you are posting to the site. Now you can really test out how well your web app handles fuzzing and the like.

The Machine Of Dance

I could have totally made this movie !

iTunes 7: Fetching artwork for fun and profit

This is kind of neat - basically you can now query Apple to get cover art for MP3s - and since you don’t have to be logged in to iTunes to do it people are writing open source modules to access it from other programs.

Worst Homecoming Ever!

Got home tonight from work - listened to a very depressing Sept. 11th edition of Marketplace. Got out of my car in my garage and smelled something funny. I opened my box freezer and be hold

I have a special regulator that keeps the temp control for the freezer. Apparently at some point it fell out of the freezer. So instead of stopping at 45F it kept going and going until the thing couldn’t get any colder.
The casualties :
2 kegs of home brew white beer I made for a beer class I was going to teach at work
1.5 cases of Maple Hop - a special beer we brewed for teach a friend to brew day -
and an amazing collection of specialty beers that aren’t available here - some aren’t even available in the US (forbidden fruit - and 2 bottles of Book Oude Kriek ) - I brought them back from Belgium. ( 4 bottles of 10 year old Chimay and a six pack of Divine #1)
I’m letting it all thaw out just to see if any of it is salvageable
Totally sucks - guess that means I”m going to have to get back to brewing soon to refill our stock pile…. but at least now the freezer will be easy to move.

LWN: Who maintains RPM?

LWN: Who maintains RPM?

Wow - look I haven’t been a fan of RedHat since RedHat 7.2 - and once I got introduced to Debian I’ve never looked back. Now that I see this sort of thing about RPM it doesn’t make me regret that choice.

As you read the comments you’ll find out that both Suse and RedHat maintain their own branches internally.

Which of course means that RPM isn’t really the standard it is presented as - which I probably would have know already if I’d ever bothered building RPMs for anything other than RedHat.

Live From The Field

Feel the love - I got an award today for an app i built at work! GO Rails - guess I’m goint to have to learn os x now
