PS Controller symbols have a cultural meaning.

“Playstation” Symbols :: Japanese Translator .co.uk

This finally explains why all Japanese games on the PS like to use circle to mean ok and X to mean go back - while all us games do the opposite.

They almost got me…

I have a PSP. I actually got it as a pre-order because I was so excited about it. Truth be told it hasn’t been the best experience. The games have mostly sucked (Lumines is the exception).

Lately I’ve been using it as a mobile video platform. I just pull content off my ReplayTV re-encode it and jam it on the memory stick. This is sweet! The screen is beautiful and the battery lasts a long time using it this way. Plus I can keep it in my pocket and turn it off and turn it back on and it will stay at the same point in the movie. This is perfect on a plane. Now I can watch stuff on the short hop from SAT -> DFW. That leg is way to short to deal with getting a laptop out and setup.

Then recently I saw an article in Wired. Actually it was more like a sidebar. It was all about how you can run old school NES/SNES/GB/Mame games on the PSP if you have a 1.0(japan)/1.50(US) firmware.

Guess what? I have a 1.50 firmware. So I downloaded some simple NES games (Hello Mario) and have been enjoying it ever since. There are more games than I can shake a stick at - if anyone can recommend me games for the above platforms I would love to know - since I never had one I wasn’t really into them at the time….

Then Sony sends me an email that I can sign up for Socom:Fireteam Bravo Beta for the PSP. There’s a catch - you have to upgrade to 2.0 firmware to even sign up. I really love Socom on the PS2 - it was one of the games I played forever. Now I can get it again - all I have to do is give up the homebrew/emulation……

I’ll admit I was tempted (for all of 3 seconds) I figure they’re going to crack the 2.0 eventually and I’ll deal with upgrading then. Until then you’ll find me in the car enjoying Mario World/Ghosts n Ghouls all over again…

PSP Exposed: Taking apart the PlayStation Portable

This is seriously not for the faint of heart. I can’t imagine doing this for anything less than a mod to allow my to use a 5GB hard drive on this beastie. But fortunately the Internet provides people with more money than sense to document this kind of madness.

Ok that’s just annoying. I have a PSP. I have wifi. I would love to be able to browse - and god forbid stream video to my little PSP :( I can only hope that it will come to the states in short order.

1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo

Ok I’m taking a long trip on a plane. I would love to be able to take some video on my PSP. Everywhere I look the 1 GB card is back ordered. I guess the people who did buy the PSP all want the same memory card.

For the love of god - please some one build an interface that lets you use a non-Sony format memory chip in the PSP.

PSP: PSP Launch: Hot or Not?

PSP: PSP Launch: Hot or Not?

Ok so there seems to be some discussion of if they are selling well or not. I was at an EBGames here in San Antonio yesterday (My girlfriend wanted to add Ape Escape to our PSP collection) They didn’t have any and told someone there that they would have a hard time finding one.

I pre-ordered mine since I got burned on the PS2. Even if it isn’t selling like crazy today - I’m not worried. The price could be lower - and my guess it will be if not soon - definitely by Christmas. The should be more games (Which middle of next month there will be - including GTA) and they should offer a 5GB hard drive (That last one is just my personal wish).

Today both my girlfriend and I put in some time on the PSP and I think it will make it. God that screen is beautiful.

PSP: Dead Pixel Checker

PSP: Dead Pixel Checker
Basically these are a series of images you can use to quickly test to see if you have dead pixels on your PSP. I’ve heard some grumbling about this - but so far I haven’t noticed any on mine.

Apparently Sony won’t honor dead pixels so maybe I don’t want to know if I have any.

PSP Web Browser found already

Ok according to this http://www.fumanchuu.com/pspdev/ There is a web browser embeded in one of the PSP launch titles. The code is apparently from sony. That hopefully means that a full browser will be released at some point. Now if only someone would produce an easy way to get a 5gb micro drive to work with this thing I’d be super happy

I’m not the only one hooked!

Penny Arcade

Apparently Lumines has the guys over at Penny Arcade hooked as well. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to get the PSP out of my girlfriend’s clutches because of that game.
